affects of wildlife, human life and nature
Every year, hundreds of metres of the coral reef are being destroyed both abioticaly and bioticaly. Global warming is affecting the reefs as the temperature of the water is gradually increasing. A huge problem that environmentalist are trying avoid is oil spills. A few years ago a huge oil tanker from China tried to cut their voyage short by passing through the Great Barrier Reef. From inexperience, the captain sailed the tanker into the reef causing thousand of litres of oil to spill in the ocean causing abiotic damage to the reef.
The biotic damage to the Great Barrier Reef is not from sharks, whales or fish but the crown of thorns starfish. This pest is an organisim that is eating away the coral in the reef, bit by bit. Environmentalist have tried to cut them in half, but unfortunately because of an adaptation, they can grow back from their cutting, like mitosis. They have tried to move them by hand but again by adaptation, they have poisonous spines on their body. The only way to destroy them is to inject them with copper sulphate solution. This kills them and is working really well. However, the copper sulphate solution leaks into the ocean, dropping the pH levels in the water, causing more marine life to be sick.
